We are RWS, RMS, RAS, GRS certified – Boden Interview

Boden is a British clothing brand, run by an international company that maintains a family-oriented culture and pays close attention to detail, recycled materials, and responsible fashion. To support this commitment, Boden is certified RWS, RMS, and RAS by Ecocert.

We spoke with Kristy O’Loughlin, Fabric and Sustainability Coordinator at Boden, who shared more about the brand’s dedication in detail.

Why did you choose to obtain RWS/RMS/RAS?

At Boden, we know our customers care deeply about what goes into their clothes - and we do too. Choosing to obtain recognised, third-party certifications like Ecocert means we can offer that extra bit of reassurance. When they spot these labels, our customers know the materials have been vetted and verified, not just claimed. It’s about being transparent and building trust.

How has this certification impacted Boden? Has it changed your production methods?

For the most part, we were already on the right path - many of our suppliers met the criteria well before we started the official paperwork. Our warehouse processes were also largely in line. That said, the journey hasn't been without its tweaks. The biggest shifts have been in the cost of raw materials and the additional admin required behind the scenes. It’s meant more time but it’s all part of making better choices.

What challenges did you face in obtaining these certifications?

Honestly, the biggest hurdle was the cost. Certified materials often carry a higher price tag, but additionally it takes time to onboard new factories, train teams, and adapt to new documentation and reporting systems. Our team’s enthusiasm to deliver the best product to our customers, creating clothes our they can truly feel good about, keeps us moving forward.

What impact does this certification have on consumers? How do you communicate about it?

Our aim is to keep things simple and clear. We highlight certifications where it matters most: right on the product pages, swing tags, and care labels. That way, our customers have the info at their fingertips when making a decision. No greenwashing, no guesswork - just honest, traceable details they can trust.

What is your next goal toward an even more sustainable textile industry?

This year, we’re proud to have added GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification to our list of milestones. It’s a big one as it covers a range of recycled fibres, from polyester and polyamide to wool, cotton, and linen. It’s been a business-wide effort, touching everything from product development to supply chain logistics. Having already worked with Ecocert on previous certifications gives us a strong foundation as we expand into more ambitious sustainability goals.
