March/April is upon us and once again, it is time for the annual spring cleaning! You control what cleaning products you use in your home, but have you ever thought about the cleaning products being used to make your cosmetic products?

Ecocert USA knows that you care about how cosmetic processors and manufacturers work to respect the environment. Our certification standards assure you that the cosmetics you buy are clean throughout the production process.

Without the Cosmos standard, your personal care products may be using formaldehyde, ammonia, or even chlorine in the manufacturing process. However, companies certified to the Cosmos standard have to adhere to strict eco-friendly policies that prohibit these as well as other environmentally harmful materials such as EDTA, products based on GMO micro-organisms, products based on phosphates, and formic acid.

The basic tenets of the Cosmos standard require promoting the use of products from organic agriculture and respecting biodiversity. Cosmos certifies processors and manufacturers that are clean and respectful to human and environmental health. To earn this certification, cleaning chemicals used after production as well as before production must comply.

To be Cosmos-certified, disinfectants can include ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide, lactic acid, plant-based alcohol, IPA, and peracetic acid. Plant-based surfactants are allowed if they adhere to low aquatic toxicity and biodegradability requirements.

So, if you’re looking for a deeper clean this Spring, look for the Cosmos certification label on your cosmetics and personal care products and you’ll be doing your part to promote organic and natural ingredients.
