EcoBeautyScore

The EcoBeautyScore (EBS) is a science-based system for assessing and communicating the environmental impact of cosmetic products based on a certification scheme.

The EBS footprint methodology relies on a multicriteria approach to evaluating environmental impacts, based on full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and aligned with the principles of the European Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method.

The EcoBeautyScore Association is a not-for-profit organisation established to help consumers around the world make more informed and sustainable choices when purchasing cosmetic and personal care products. The Association has developed the framework and comparable environmental scoring system for beauty products, built on a common, science methodology.

The EcoBeautyScore Association has created a solution that provides:

• A common environmental footprint assessment methodology that measures impact across 16 key indicators, including carbon emissions, water use and resource consumption, in line with the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) principles
• A shared database of cosmetic ingredients and raw materials, covering both formulation and packaging components
• A digital scoring platform that enables brands to assess environmental footprint across a product’s full lifecycle, from ingredient sourcing through to use and disposal
• A clear A to E scoring system, where A represents the lowest environmental impact and E the highest, relative to comparable products in the same category

Any brand selling cosmetic and personal care products in the European region is welcome to purchase a license to access the scoring platform, a membership is not required.

EBS certification applies to all users of the EBS platform who wish to publish the score for at least one of the product segments listed below within the European market:

• Hair Wash
• Hair Treat
• Face Moisturize & Treat
• Body Wash

• Purchase a license to access the scoring platform
• Calculate and display the rating of your products in a transparent manner
• Have the result of the scoring verified during an audit by an independent certification body such as Ecocert, before the publication of the EBS score of the products
• Evaluation of the implementation of the EcoBeautyScore scheme leading to the overall score through a selection of rated products
• Monitoring of the scoring methodology through regular audit
