What is the purpose of the EcoBeautyScore scoring system?
The EcoBeautyScore is a science-based system for assessing and communicating the environmental impact of cosmetic products based on a certification scheme.
It was developed by the EcoBeautyScore Association, a not-for-profit organisation established to help consumers around the world make more informed and sustainable choices when purchasing cosmetic and personal care products. The Association has developed the framework and comparable environmental scoring system for beauty products, built on a common, science-based methodology.
The key guarantees of the EcoBeautyScore scoring system
The EcoBeautyScore footprint methodology relies on a multi-criteria approach to evaluating environmental impacts, aligned with the principles of the European Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method of full lifecycle assessment (LCA).
The EcoBeautyScore Association has created a solution that provides:
- A common environmental footprint assessment methodology that measures impact across 16 key indicators, including carbon emissions, water use and resource consumption, in line with the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) principles
- A shared database of cosmetic ingredients and raw materials, covering both formulation and packaging components
- A digital scoring platform that enables brands to assess environmental footprint across a product’s full lifecycle, from ingredient sourcing through to use and disposal
- A clear A to E scoring system, where A represents the lowest environmental impact and E the highest, relative to comparable products in the same category
Who can apply for this rating system?
Any brand or manufacturer of finished cosmetic and personal care products is welcome to purchase a license to access the scoring platform; a membership is not required.
An EcoBeautyScore can currently be applied to any product sold in the European market for the following product segments:
- Hair Wash
- Hair Treat
- Face Moisturize & Treat
- Body Wash
