Overview of the sector

The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world and generates significant waste, especially with the rise of fast fashion since 2000.

  • On average, a person buys 60% more clothes than 15 years ago and keeps them half as long. The volume of textile waste has more than doubled between the years 2000 and 2015.
  • 52% of the textile fibers produced in the world in 2020 are polyester fibers, which is a non-renewable resource.

The recycling of textile materials is therefore a very interesting solution to significantly reduce the environmental impact of fiber production and to limit our consumption of fossil energy.

What is the Global Recycled Standard label for?

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) label is a standard held and updated by the American association Textile Exchange. Ecocert certifies operators worldwide according to the GRS standard since 2020:

This standard guarantees:

  • A product containing 20% or more of recycled materials, respectful of social and environmental requirements, processed sustainably
  • A transparent communication of the production chain (up to the finished product) with the consumers, thanks to a strong traceability of the textiles based on fibers or materials of recycled origin (see picture at the bottom of the article)

To use the GRS logo, the product must contain at least 50% of recycled materials.
