Stay informed of the latest regulatory information for organic farming: technical reminder on EC Regulation and news about NOP.

 

Technical reminder on EC Regulation 

From 1st January 2014

  • Yeast and yeast products have to be taken into account in the calculation of the organic percentage of a finished product (except products of the wine sector).
  • End of the possibility to tether organic cattle in buildings already existing before 24 August 2000.
    NB: Derogation for tethering in small holdings according to Art 39 of REC 889/08 is still possible
  • Full compliance with production rules of Reg 889/2008 for poultry concerning  housing conditions (Art 12) and stocking density (Art 15) required.

Aquaculture : prolongation of a deadline to use non-organic juveniles and seeds in aquaculture.

NB: the possibility to use 80% of non organic juveniles that expired at the end of the year 2013 has been extended for one year (by 31 December 2014).

 

News about NOP 

From 1st January 2014, an equivalence between NOP and Japanese organic rules JAS has become effective : 

  • Plant and plant based processed products (including mushroom) certified NOP of US origin or whose final processing or packaging occurs within the US are recognised as equivalent to JAS in Japan (with a specific transaction certificate)
  • Plant and plant based processed products (including mushroom) certified JAS of Japan origin or whose final processing or packaging occurs within the Japan are recognised as equivalent to NOP in US (with a specific transaction certificate)

In USDA’s Program Handbook, among the addition or update of documents, 2 important ressources have been added. An instruction NOP 2615 to help operators understand how to complete and update the OSP, and notify any changes and A Guidance NOP 5031 describing the certification requirements for handling unpackaged organic products.
