Organic farming

Analysis is a tool made available to inspectors and certification officers to ensure compliance with organic production methods as specified in the organic farming regulations.

An annual analysis plan, which sets the minimum number of tests to be conducted over the year, is created from a products/customers risk analysis. The objective is to make the certification system secure by checking the reliability of the operators' management of organic output.

Throughout the year, samples described as "routine" are therefore taken, to which are added samples taken following suspected contamination. These samples make it possible firstly to ensure that operators are complying with organic production methods and secondly to check that the remedial measures put in place by our customers have been effective. It is also a certification body's duty to take samples whenever the food safety of products may have been compromised.

Analysis is governed by the organic farming regulations

  • Article 86 European Commission (EC) regulations 889/2008
  • NOP § 205.670

The field testing carried out varies greatly, e.g. pesticide residues, GMOs, chemical ionisation, prohibited ingredients (additives, processing aids), purity, heavy metals, dioxins, PAHs, mycotoxins, etc.

Sampling is carried out by Ecocert inspectors, approved and trained in compliance with the European directives and international standards in force. The samples are then sent to laboratories approved by Ecocert. These laboratories are selected on the basis of specific criteria and evaluated every year.

All test results are interpreted by the Analysis Department. Investigations regarding the origin and extent of contamination are undertaken as soon as contaminants are found in abnormal quantities. Products can be demoted from the organic value chain and the associated sanctions can range from a request for remedial action to licence suspension (only for France) and may include further sanction-lifting testing. The impact of sampling/analysis on certification decisions is therefore significant and under full control.
