L'insetting : définition et rôle d'Ecocert

Insetting

Over the last five years, certain businesses have automatically invested in plans to reduce their carbon emissions within their own value chains in an effort to:

  •         reduce energy consumption
  •         seek alternative energies
  •         develop more sustainable and less CO2 emmitting farming practices
  •         plant trees in the agricultural sector
  •         preserve the forest areas where the business buys its products from

What is ‘Insetting’?

Also called ‘integrated carbon offsetting’, ‘Insetting’ is a way to counterbalance the carbon footprint within the value chain of a company.

Insetting is different to classic carbon offsetting, the proposals for which are generally not developed within the direct sphere of influence of a business (suppliers for example).

In what form?

A collaborative platform called the ‘International Platform for Insetting’ (IPI: www.insettingplatform.com) was created to combine the efforts of businesses and other operators.

Who is part of the IPI?

Different types of organisations:

  •         Businesses: Accorhotels, Chanel, Guerlain, Kering, L'Oreal or Nespresso
  •         NGOs, standards and certification bodies: WWF France, Plan Vivo and Ecocert
  •         Climate project developers: Climate Partner, South Pole Carbon or PUR Projet

What are the objectives?

  •         Significant reductions in costs and carbon footprint at the heart of the value creation processes of businesses
  •         Evolution of economic models and performance factors of production methods and procedures

To what effect ?

  •         Integrated climate commitments are seen as more legitimate by the public
  •         A solid and lasting investment into the climate, businesses will benefit directly from this investment in terms of their economic plan and also their image
  •         Regenerate the ecosystems from which businesses source their products, increasing and diversifying the incomes of agricultural producers
  •         Contribute to the securing of supply channels for businesses in terms of both quality and quantity

What are the proposals and over what period of time ?

Insetting projects are generally proposed over the long term, from 20 to 40 years for forestry projects for example, thus creating a ‘non-commercial’ relationship with positive communal values.

Beyond carbon, the members of the IPI decided to expand the definition and ambition of Insetting by aiming to positively impact water, soil, biodiversity, the economy, social issues and society.

In order to go even further, the IPI developed a standard: the Insetting Program Standard (IPS) which allows businesses to certify their Insetting schemes and to record the resulting impacts.

ECOCERT: Certification body for Insetting schemes

Ecocert, as a third party, can certify the Insetting scheme in two parts:

  •         On a business level, an inspection is carried out on the measures and actions taken by a business to reduce CO2 emissions

  •         On a project level, an inspection is carried out on the reduction of emissions in the business’s supply chain (small farmers). For reforestation projects, this work includes on-site checks of the planting of trees and the co-benefits of agroforestry models.
