The ESR standard : "Equitable, Solidaire, Responsable"*

The first version of the ESR standard was issued in 2007 in close cooperation with representative parties of the fair trade industry. At the time, the scope was focused on traditional South/North Fair Trade. In 2013, the ESR standard was revised to include the provision of services for North/North Fair Trade.

(*) Fair Trade, Solidarity, Responsibility

A universal vision of Fair Trade

The Fair Trade reference is traditionally associated with small producers based in developing “Southern” countries and exporting to the “North”. The development of North/North Fair Trade is equally relevant: promoting the sustainability of local agriculture and relationships between growers/producers and processors, whilst meeting the growing demand in Fair Trade of consumers especially in Europe and North America. Hence the scope of the ESR standard has now been extended to include Fair Trade products from North-based developed countries.

Fair Trade and Organic Farming

The concepts of Fair Trade and organic farming are strongly connected in the consumer’s mind. According to the IFOAM, one of the underlying principles of organic farming is fairness although it seems to have been left out of the main organic regulations (CE, NOP, JAS, etc.).

The ESR standard brings out the synergy of the organic and fair trade requirements. The organic or ecological product certification is a pre-requisite for Fair Trade certification. Craft supplies must originate from responsible supply chains.
